“According to the American Pregnancy Association, routine Prenatal massage has been shown to improve pregnancy outcome and maternal health”, says, Harmony Morgan, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands). “That’s why it’s so important your Massage Therapist has received the advanced, hands-on training to address specific needs of pregnancy. The Pre-Natal Massage Course offered here at Healing Hands does just that”, she added.
A Certified Pre-Nata Massage Therapist will place the client in one of three supported positions. These include:.
- Face-up on a wedge-like pillow to relieve pressure on the heart’s main artery, the Vena Cava.
- A supported, side-lying positioning with pillows strategically positioned to avoid stretching uterine ligaments. A pillow may be placed between the knees, below the belly, at the back, between the ankles, and beneath the head for optimal comfort and body alignment.
- A Pregnancy Massage Table with cut-outs for the breasts and belly.
Circulatory Massage (Swedish)
Circulatory Massage is recommended during pregnancy because it addresses many common hormonal and physical changes. It includes the use of Effleurage (long, fluid strokes), Petrissage (back and forth kneading) and Fanning (outward stroking motion). Used to stretch and manipulate tension out of the muscles these strokes increase circulation, loosen muscle tension, and relieve joint stiffness. They combine to soothe the recipient into a quiet, calm state of deep relaxation!
Massage Regulates Hormones
Mayo Clinic research studies on the effects of Massage on the body include a substantial boost in Serotonin and Dopamine which enhance mood and decrease pain. Studies also show a decrease in levels of stress hormones such as Cortisol and Epinephrine. Regular Pregnancy Massage can help regulate hormones and improve maternal health and wellbeing.
Relieving Nerve Pain and Swelling
During Pregnancy, the pressure of the uterus on the pelvic floor can affect nearby nerves. Many women experience nerve pain that originates in the low back and can spread down the entire leg. It is the increased weight on muscles and joints that causes them to swell, become stiff, and painful. A Pre-natal Massage addresses nerve pain by releasing muscle tension, improving circulation, and stimulating the Lymph System to remove fluids from swollen joints.
Prenatal Massage and Pregnancy Care
As I’ve outlined, Prenatal Massage is an effective self-care strategy for pregnant women. It boosts relaxation, enhances mood, improves cardiovascular health, and relieves pain. These changes lead to better maternal health, infant health, and pregnancy outcomes..
