“Lomi Lomi is a highly spiritual form of body work that originated thousands of years ago in Old Polynesia.” said Harmony Morgan, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills. “While many forms of Lomi Lomi have been passed down from generation to generation, Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, the form taught in this course, was developed in ancient Temples by Kahunas (Master Healers) as a ‘Rite of Passage’ ceremony. The intention was to help clear the recipient’s spiritual slate of unresolved issues. Lomi Lomi’s intention is to help the recipient gain clarity about their intended life-path forward,” she added.
In the Lomi Lomi courses offered at Healing Hands, students learn how to give the traditional, full-body massage as well as advanced strokes and techniques. Students also learn to practice ‘pule’ or ‘pray-full intention’ which is an important aspect of this modality. Pule requires students to release all prejudice and ego, accepting each client’s individuality and unique place along their life’s journey.
Healing Hands’ dynamic 60-hour Lomi Lomi course will be taught at the Laguna Hills Classroom by Staff Instructor Keoni Salgado this January. Classes will be held on Sundays from 10a – 4pm & Monday evenings from 6 – 10pm starting on January 26 through March 2, 2020. Registration deadline is January 16th.
The English translation for Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, “Massage Journey to the Stars”, represents the Spiritual transformative experience for which Lomi Lomi is known. Ancient Hawaiians believed it could rearrange the DNA of the recipient. The intention of the Lomi Lomi practitioner is to facilitate a state of Pono Pono for the recipient, which means ‘Conflict free and aligned with the divine’.
Based on a Martial Art form called ‘Lua’, a Lomi Lomi massage is compared to a moving meditation by practitioners. Ideally the bodywork is performed in ‘sacred space’ accompanied by traditional Hawaiian music. The practitioner begins the massage with a prayer for the recipient. Next, they perform a hands-on scan of the body to discern areas of tension or restricted movement. Then, a combination of passive joint movements are used to position, relax, and warm up the body before applying coconut oil.
The benefits of the Lomi Lomi massage begin as the practitioner begins maneuvering around the table applying smooth, rhythmic, strokes to various parts of the body.
While Lomi Lomi uses a limited number of body-work strokes, each massage is customized by the practitioner who creatively combines strokes and applies them where needed.
While some recipients of Lomi Lomi report feeling a deep sense of calm and peace following their massage, others describe it as being more emotionally profound. In all cases, however, the recipients report that the experience opened their hearts, and provided an enhanced sense of love and connection to themselves and others.
