This class will provide an introduction to the work of Thomas Hanna, founder of Hanna Somatics, student of Moshe Feldenkrais and person who first coined and defined the terms “Somatics” and be extended to include the many and varied modalities under the rubrics of Somatic Education, Somatic Repatterning and others contained in Mary Ann Foster’s book Somatic Patterning. Following that text we will consider, among others, developmental, neuromuscular, postural patterning techniques, integrative movement modalities such as Labanalysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, The Alexander Technique, The Feldenkrais Method, and integrative manual therapies such as Rolfing and Aston Patterning, PNF, and Cranial Sacral Therapy. There will be an emphasis on postural, movement and pain easement exercises for both clients and practitioners.
