Shiatsu is a Japanese Massage technique based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its name translates to “finger pressure” in Japanese. Shiatsu techniques include working with palms, knuckles, fingers, thumbs, elbows, and feet. Shiatsu also incorporates assisted stretchingjoint manipulationmobilization, and acupressure. Practices such as Shiatsu have been practiced throughout Asia for centuries. Each culture has its own version of massage. These include Thai Massage from Thailand and Ayurvedic Massage from India.

Shiatsu helps restore balance in mind and body. It promotes the flow of ‘qi’ (energy) through the body and activates our innate healing system.  Rather than fluid strokes, Shiatsu Practitioners will use a variety of compression techniques and manipulations to affect the 12 energetic pathways of the body called “Meridians”.(Link)

Shiatsu is traditionally performed on a floor mat but can be adapted to a massage table. The patient is required to dress in loose work-out clothing so their body can be moved and manipulated by the Therapist.   Many students start a Shiatsu massage by “crawling the body” to sense areas of tension or pain. They then use pressure along the different Meridians to promote circulation and energy flow.  Meridians are found on their patient’s back, neck, shoulders, torso, arms, legs, and feet, so it provides a therapeutic, full-body massage.

Holistic Health is all about creating a space for the ‘letting go’ experience that facilitates all healing. The therapeutic and holistic effects of Shiatsu include:  a reduction in muscle stiffness, anxiety, and stress; improved circulation and range of motion; plus, an enhanced sense of well-being.

A career as a Professional Massage Therapist offers financial independence, a strong job outlook, flexible hours, and a variety of work environments.  It also provides an opportunity to make a positive difference in our communities.
