Holistic Massage School Shares Six Strategies for Holistic Self-Care

As human beings, we are free to decide how we want to live and show up in the world. During our youth, we often took our health for granted. We often over-extended ourselves physically and emotionally to establish ourselves as adults. It’s easy to neglect our self-care when we’re struggling to balance professional and personal commitments. But living in over-drive is not sustainable for your physical or emotional wellbeing.

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, we teach Massage Therapy and other Holistic Healing Arts. We recognize the interconnectedness between our physical, mental, and spiritual health. All classes explore how massage and bodywork positively affects the mind and body. They also include various ‘holistic’ self-care strategies to optimize health for our Students.

Below are Healing Hands’ Six Essential ‘Strategies for Self-Care.’

1 – Move Your Body!

Exercise is essential for holistic health. Fortunately, it’s a healthy endeavor available to anyone at any time!  Taking time daily to stretch, warm up your muscles, and engage in moderate physical activity is just one way to improve your health.

Did you know, just 30 minutes of brisk walking each day can reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease? And it can stimulate the body’s releases of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” hormones. Accordingly, exercise helps reduce pain and enhances mood.

2 – Eat Healthy Foods!

In addition to serving as fuel for our bodies, food affects our mood, energy level and ability to focus.  No need to starve yourself or give up your favorite foods to achieve nutritional health. Just commit to making healthier food choices every day. Tips:

  • Eat several small, balanced meals throughout the day to avoid cravings.
  • Pay attention to food labels, avoid high fructose syrups, and sugars whenever possible.
  • Avoid packaged food products that use tons of preservatives.
  • Be mindful of your individual nutritional needs and adjust eating habits accordingly.

3 – Focus on Self-Development!

Carve out time in your schedule to work on Self-Development activities. This may involve:

  • Taking a new class.
  • Watching educational videos and podcasts.
  • Taking time for quiet introspection.
  • Learning a new language.
  • Taking a cooking, gardening, or painting class.

By exploring your interests and passions, you will open yourself to meeting new people. New experiences give us opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Remain open to engaging with others with the intention of building a supportive community.

4 – Reconnect to Nature!

Fresh air, the scent of flowers, and the feel of the ground beneath your feet can be healing to your entire being. Spending time in nature, without the distractions of modern technology is extremely relaxing and transformative.

  • Enjoy a bike-ride around the neighborhood.
  • Take a hike along a nature trail.
  • Address your yard or garden.
  • Spend an afternoon at the pool or beach.

All these ways of connecting to nature can relax your mind and renew your Spirit.

5 – Quiet Your Inner Critic:

Self-development is a life-long process of understanding and managing emotions. Emotional maturity comes as we learn to respond to life’s difficulties rather than react. Mistakes are an inevitable part of life. When mistakes happen, don’t flood your system with stress hormones via negative self-talk. Instead, change your inner dialogue to one of encouragement and boost feel-good endorphins. Appreciating yourself for the courage to face difficult challenges will build your self-confidence and self-esteem.

6 – Escape Your Comfort Zone:

Confidence is not something we are born with.  It is a skill we develop as we challenge ourselves to move beyond self- limiting beliefs about what we can accomplish.  There are a variety of ways to gain confidence, including:

  • Adopting a growth oriented “practice makes perfect” mindset.
