Holistic Massage School Supports 2019 ‘Stand Down’ Event for Homeless Veterans

Healing Hands student, Austin Robles, seen here with co-student Nancy Taylor, worked on over 52 Veterans during the 2017 event that took place during a SoCal heat-wave!

Stand Down events are part of a community-based intervention program designed to help homeless Veterans renew their health, re-gain their independence, and pave a path for their future”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “This year, Staff Instructor, Sandra Christie, will be supervising Healing Hands’ student/volunteers at the San-Diego event.  Accordingly, I’d like to encourage all Massage Therapy and Holistic Health Practitioner Students to sign-up today!  All you need to do is send an e-mail to schristiemassage@hotmail.com  – Subject line: “Stand Down -San Diego.  Be sure to add Sandra’s e-mail address to your Contacts list so you get scheduling, parking and general participation information.”, she added.

According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, ‘Stand Down’ events are recognized as the most valuable outreach tool for homeless veterans in the nation. The 2019 San-Diego ‘Stand Down’ begins on Friday, July 28th at 8:30 am and ends on Sunday, July 30 at 2pm. It will be staged at San Diego High School field located at 1405 Park Boulevard.

Modeled after the ‘Stand Down’ concept used during the Vietnam War, the event will give street weary homeless Veterans an opportunity to rest, re-charge and re-vision their lives.  They offer Veterans access to shelter, VA counseling, VA benefits, meal services, integrative medicine, legal services, employment counseling and job referrals.  With access to the resources they need, homeless Veterans are given a path to independence and the achievement of their long-term goals.

“Volunteering for a Stand Down is a great way to show homeless veterans how much you appreciate their service and sacrifice”, says Harmony Morgan, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills.  It’s also a wonderful opportunity for students to employ newly learned skills in massage and bodywork for a very worthy cause”, she continued.

At Stand Down – San Diego, Healing Hands volunteers will work together in the Complementary/ Alternative Medicine tent.  Student Volunteers are asked to bring their own massage tables, towels and/or sheets to accommodate multiple massages. Event hours will be: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on Sunday.
