Holistic Massage School Students Share – How Sound Makes Art!

“It’s nearing the end of the Winter Semester at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, which means it’s time for students of our Anatomy for Bodyworkers class to take their finals and give their last, live team presentation” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills.  “Our Anatomy class presentations are often the high-light for student practitioners.  It gives them an opportunity to show-case newly acquired knowledge in a creative, fun and interactive way.  In addition to team building, these group presentations provide students with an excellent public speaking opportunity which further develops their self-confidence and professionalism” she added.

This semester’s Anatomy for Bodyworkers class at the Laguna Hills campus, was taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. Students were separated into five groups and tasked with creating a group presentation on each of the five human senses.

One of the students’ presentations on ‘Hearing’ incorporated all the basics on how the human ear receives, and processes sound, then introduced an especially interesting pictures and new concepts.  One such concept came from a You-Tube video that demonstrated how vibration and frequency organize matter into geometric forms.

The ‘Resonance Experiment’ as students named it, showed the surface of a speaker topped with fine grains of sand.  As music played through it, its sound resonance vibrates.  As a result, the areas of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible, creating exquisite geometric shapes.  Different patterns emerged depending on the frequency of the sound.

The photos on the left show just a few of the geometric shapes resulting from the vibration and resonance of sound.
