Throughout the year, Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) offers a comprehensive, 100-hour course named: Anatomy for Bodyworkers taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. A requirement for Healing Hands 600-hour Massage Therapist, and 1000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner Programs, Anatomy for Bodyworkers delves deeply into the study of each of the body’s Systems. These include: Muscular, Skeletal, Cardio-Vascular, Integumentary (Skin), Respiratory, and Immune Systems.
Anatomy for Bodyworkers lets students explore how each of these Systems function, interact with one another, and how they affect one’s whole health. It.is also designed to increase the student’s knowledge of anatomical terms and concepts, giving them opportunity to work with or along-side Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors and in clinical settings such as Hospitals, Doctors offices and Sports/Rehab Centers.
On the last day of class, Anatomy for Bodyworkers students were tasked with delivering a live, team presentation on one of the body’s five senses. Student presentations included hand-crafted displays, photos, graphics, instructional videos, hand-outs and live demonstrations. One presentation, on the sense of “Sight” stood out among all others, thanks to a young, female student named Kendall.
Kendall shared her personal story of life without sight. Born 4 months premature, weighing only 1.5 pounds, Kendall was confined to an incubator for several months after birth. There, she was subjected to a pressurized supply of oxygen that caused the retinas in both her eyes to detach, resulting in blindness. Kendall shared what it was like going to a school for the blind, and about the technology, utility aids and strategies she uses to dress, study, write, read and navigate her physical surroundings.
Kendall also shared some of the challenges she faces, like trying to cross a street at a busy intersection that doesn’t have audible queues. She also shared how her blindness has been a blessing, citing how her lack of vision keeps her from pre-judging others based on their race, color, sexual preference or appearance. This kind of insight comes naturally to Kendall and represent just one of the reasons her classmates feel enriched by her presence and inspired by her wisdom.
At the end of class, Instructor Denise invited students to ‘circle up’ to say their goodbyes to graduating classmates. After reminding them of the self-limiting beliefs and fears they had coming into the class, she commended them for rising to meet those challenges. Then with utmost sincerity and pride, Denise acknowledged her students for their personal and professional growth, ending class with the same heart-centered approach with which it began. Students surrounded Denise to deliver a group hug and express their gratitude for lessons learned.
