Massage Therapy Techniques: Spreading The Love

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health

Part of learning about various massage therapy techniques is learning how to best utilize those skills to make people healthier and happier. Whether an athlete needs rehabilitating or a patient needs to relieve stress in their body, a massage therapist has the honor of being a part of this person’s journey. Here are three examples of courses that we offer at Healing Hands and how they can provide you with the necessary skills to lend a healing hand:

Deep Tissue Manipulation

Deep tissue massages have a multitude of benefits; from treating chronic back pain and arthritis to lowering blood pressure and breaking up scar tissue. It can also improve a client’s posture, flexibility, range of motion, and energy level, while at the same time providing relief from tension, aches, pains and stiffness. In our deep tissue manipulation course, we teach you about how to manipulate fascia (the collagen web-like network that permeates the entire body) to create more balance and ease of movement in the body. This technique puts a special emphasis on the mind-body connection, which is why it’s important to us to teach you effective communication skills to facilitate the emotional awareness associated with this kind of deep bodywork.

Tui Na Massage

Tui Na is a massage modality based on traditional Chinese medicine. It involves stimulation of acupressure points to directly affect the flow and balance of “chi”, (life energy) through “meridians” or channels in the body. In this course, you would learn manipulation techniques to move chi through ill and injured areas of the body where blockages tend to occur. You’d also practice specific treatments to address chronic pain, common illnesses, and disorders of the spine and joints, such as, Sciatica and rotator cuff problems. Through demonstration and hands- on practice you’ll be able to master both oscillating techniques to increase energy, as well as the traditional “presses and pulls” characteristic of Tui Na.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a form of massage that originated in Japan and traditional Chinese medicine. It uses a caring touch to aid in self-healing and also uses gentle stretching and manipulation techniques. Shiatsu, meaning “finger pressure,” creates pressure with the thumbs, hands, elbows, or knees on various pressure points of the body. Our students learn this soothing and healing technique to help people restore and maintain their energy, reduce problems with their neck, shoulders, and back, and promote healing from sprains and strains.
