Holistic Massage School Offers Advanced Courses in Structural Integration
Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH) offers a 1000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner Program that gives students a well-rounded, broad range of specialized skills and knowledge in the Holistic Healing Arts. Going beyond HH’s 500 hours Massage Therapy Program, which is necessary to become State Certified, students who enrolled in the Holistic Health Practitioner Program (HHP) chose to take their knowledge and skills to the next level. By selecting the HHP Program, these students gained access to more than 80 massage and related holistic health classes. Many of which are advanced techniques and complimentary classes such as: Neuro-muscular and Trigger Point therapies, Myofacial Meridians, Nutritional Superfoods, and Advanced Herbal Preparations.
HH’s Holistic Health Practitioners are uniquely qualified to promote the benefits of natural health in our communities. While many bring their expertise to Spa or Massage Clinic settings, others enjoy the challenge of working with Athletes, Physical Therapists, Doctors and Chiropractors who require they have advanced knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology.
A trail-blazer when it comes to holistic education in Southern California, HH is one of the few massage schools in the state that offers 156 hours of Structural Integration. According to the school’s course Instructor, Ken Smith, “Structural Integration aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. (Fascia surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body and gives muscles shape and the body its structure.) Through massage, the fascia is lengthened, allowing muscles to move more freely and efficiently. In Structural Integration, the therapist applies pressure to the body systematically to release restricted fascia so the body can return to its optimal position.”
Principals of Structural Integration is a prerequisite for the 10 Sessions of Structural Integration and is a 36 hours course. Principals of Structural Integration teaches students how the continuing pull of gravity and stress of daily activities and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The body’s fascia gradually shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate misalignment resulting in body aches, pain, stiffness, and diminished energy. In this class students learn how gravity can be a negative or positive force, and how to apply geometry to balance structure and improve posture. They gain a clear understanding of the role connective tissue plays in our bodies and learn how interactive movement with the client can achieve longer lasting results. This course emphasizes how to touch our clients’ awareness, not just their bodies.
In HH’s 10 Sessions of Structural Integration course, students learn Ida Rolf’s original 10 session series. This is a systematic approach for taking the human frame apart and reorganizing it with a more balanced and efficient one. Each of the 10 sessions is not a series of techniques, but rather a series of goals that students and clients work together to achieve. Through lecture, dialogue, demonstration, and hands-on practice, students are able to experience being both the giver and receiver of a new progression in the series of 10 each week. When a body is aligned through Structural Integration, it is able to move with greater ease making good posture effortless, breathing easier, and requiring less energy to function. As the body becomes more flexible and coordinated, everyday function and performance improves.
